Purpose
The Delta Police Department (DPD) is committed to transparency by providing the community with timely, accessible information about crime in Delta.
This dashboard is updated quarterly and presents crime statistics up to the most recently completed quarter. Users can view overall trends, filter results by district, and compare quarterly and year-to-date results with the corresponding periods of the previous year. The accompanying district map shows how Delta is divided into DPD's five policing districts and provides a geographic reference for interpreting district-level crime statistics.
The dashboard provides an overview of monitored offences, which are crime types that DPD regularly tracks to identify emerging trends, support intelligence-led policing and inform operational priorities. This information helps DPD assess changes in crime patterns, direct resources and adjust strategies to support community safety.
Important Information
The following information should be considered when using the dashboard.
-
Reported vs Actual Incidents
The data includes incidents reported to or discovered by police. Not all crimes are reported or otherwise come to police attention. Incidents determined through investigation to be unfounded are not included. An incident is classified as unfounded when police confirm that no offence occurred or was attempted.
-
Data Updates and Changes
These statistics reflect police records as of the extraction date noted on the main page. Data and offence classification may change over time due to ongoing investigations, file reviews, quality control and late-reported incidents.
-
Timing of Reported Incidents
An increase in reported incidents during a quarter does not necessarily mean they occurred during that period. Some incidents may have occurred earlier but were reported during the current quarter. Late reporting, particularly for sexual offences, can affect the data, as historical sexual assaults are often reported later.
-
Differences in Reporting Methods
The quarterly crime statistics use an all-offences approach, which counts each monitored offence associated with a call for service (CFS). As a result, a single CFS may be counted under more than one monitored offence type.
Other reporting products may use different methods. For example, DPD's crime mapping dashboard uses a primary offence approach, which counts only the primary or most serious offence associated with an incident. Other police agencies and Statistics Canada may also use different reporting methods.
These differences should be considered when comparing crime statistics across reporting products and police agencies.
-
Incident Location and Privacy
Incident locations represent the general area where a reported offence occurred, not its exact location. To protect privacy, personal identifying information is not displayed, and locations are generalized to the hundred-block or thousand-block level.
Map markers represent approximate locations and may appear over a particular property due to how locations are displayed on the map. This does not mean that an offence occurred at that property.
Sexual offences, cybercrime and intimate partner violence (IPV) are included in the statistical totals but are not mapped.
-
Scope of the Dashboard
The dashboard presents selected monitored offences and does not include every incident reported to DPD or every activity undertaken by police. Offence categories are based on police records and applicable reporting standards.
-
Interpreting Changes
Quarterly and district level results may involve relatively small numbers. As a result, a small change in the number of incidents may produce a significant percentage increase or decrease.
