Purpose
The Delta Police Department (DPD) is committed to providing the community with timely, accessible information about crime in Delta.
This interactive map provides an overview of selected reported crime incidents across Delta. By default, the map displays incidents reported throughout Delta over the previous seven days. Users can customize their view by selecting a date range, crime type or district, with access to historical data from the previous 12 months. The accompanying district map shows how Delta is divided into DPD's five policing districts and provides a geographic reference for interpreting district-level crime statistics.
Important Information
The following information should be considered when using the crime mapping dashboard.
-
Reported vs. Actual Incidents
The data includes incidents reported to or discovered by police. Not all crimes are reported or otherwise come to police attention. Incidents determined through investigation to be unfounded are not included. An incident is classified as unfounded when police confirm that no offence occurred or was attempted.
-
Data Updates and Changes
The dashboard is updated daily and reflects police records available at the time of the update. Information may change over time due to ongoing investigations, file reviews, quality control, late reporting or changes to offence classifications.
-
Timing of Reported Incidents
The date an incident is reported to police may differ from when the incident occurred. As a result, incidents appearing within a selected date range may include offences that occurred earlier but were reported during that period.
-
Incident Location and Privacy
To protect privacy, personal identifying information is not displayed, and incident locations are generalized to the hundred-block or thousand-block level.
Map markers represent the general area where an offence was reported to have occurred, not its exact location. A marker may appear on a specific property or address due to how locations are displayed on the map. This does not mean that the incident occurred at that property or address.
-
Scope of the Dashboard
The dashboard displays selected monitored offences and does not represent all crime reported to DPD or all police calls for service (CFS). Records without a usable location or with an address outside Delta are not displayed on the map.
-
Interpreting the Map
The map is intended to provide a general geographic view of selected reported crime occurrences. The location and number of mapped occurrences should be considered in context and should not be interpreted as a complete measure of crime or safety in a particular area. Apparent concentrations of incidents do not necessarily indicate that a particular location is unsafe.
-
Reporting Method
The crime mapping dashboard uses a primary offence approach, meaning each call for service is represented once on the map based on its primary Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) classification.
This differs from DPD's quarterly crime statistics, which use an all-offences approach and may count more than one monitored offence associated with the same CFS. As a result, figures from the crime mapping dashboard and quarterly crime statistics may differ and should not be directly compared.
