DPD statement on patch in photo

Monday, Nov 22, 2021
News Release

The Delta Police Department recently shared a post of two officers with body worn cameras affixed to their external vests, to accompany a news release about the expansion of this pilot program. In the photo, one of the officers was wearing a small Canadian flag velcro patch above the camera, with a blue line across the Canadian flag.

The image was posted in error, and should not have gone out on DPD official social media channels. It has elicited some concern in comments in social media. When the DPD became aware of the concerns on Nov. 21, we took down the posts and the image.

The Delta Police Department apologizes to anyone who was upset or offended by the use of this image.
We understand there are a number of interpretations of the image. We are also aware that recently, particularly in the United States, this image is being linked with values that do not at all align with those of the Delta Police Department.

The DPD has informed its sworn officers, that officers are not to wear patches or equipment on their vests that are not provided and authorized by the DPD. A communication is being sent out today by our senior management team, and our front-line supervisors will follow up with all officers.

The DPD believes it is important for all its officers to have a professional appearance that fosters confidence and shows our respect for the community we serve.
