Decrease in Crime Noted in Delta for 2024

EDIT May 14, 2024 - The below noted data was presented to the Delta Police Board during the April 2024 Delta Police Board meeting.  The news release below, unedited, advised that the data would be presented to the Delta Police Board on May 14th.  The May 14th presentation will include the data from the month of April as well.

Delta, BC – May 13th, 2024 – The Delta Police Department (DPD) is set to present crime data for the first quarter of 2024 at the upcoming Delta Police Board meeting on May 15th, 2024. Noteworthy decreases in both property and violent crimes have been observed in Delta, and we're eager to share these statistics with the public.

DPD's ongoing monitoring of crime reporting indicates a positive trend, with crime rates declining in the first quarter of 2024. Chief Dubord states, “I am proud of the work our team continues to do in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. Our community-first policing approach, which prioritizes the needs and expectations of our community, remains at the forefront of our efforts.”

Property Crime:

  • Commercial break and enters decreased by 23% compared to Q1 2023 and by 14% compared to the three-year average.
  • Residential break and enters dropped by 20% compared to Q1 2023 and by 26% compared to the three-year average.
  • Instances of "theft of vehicle" decreased by 42% compared to Q1 2023 and by 25% compared to the three-year average.
  • "Theft from vehicle" plummeted by 64% compared to Q1 2023 and by 61% compared to the three-year average.

Violent Crime:

  • Assaults in Q1 2024 decreased to 80 from 107 in Q1 2023, marking a 25% decrease, and down 9% compared to the three-year average.
  • Robberies saw a significant reduction from 9 to 2 during the same period, constituting a 78% decrease, and down 71% compared to the three-year average.
  • Other "persons" offences, such as uttering threats and harassment, decreased by 38% compared to the previous year and by 28% compared to the three-year average.
  • However, intimate partner violence reported an increase of 19% compared to the three-year average.

Sexual Offences:

  • Level 1 sexual assaults decreased by 13% compared to the three-year average, but level 2 and 3 sexual assaults increased slightly from 7 to 10 compared to Q1 2023. The three-year average for these assaults is 6.

Other Notable Trends:

  • Collisions in Delta are 7% below the three-year average.
  • Violent offences involving youth are down by 55% compared to the three-year average.

These statistics reflect a positive shift in the safety and security of Delta, demonstrating the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to combat crime. Partnership with our community members increases the effectiveness of our crime reduction strategies, and we encourage our community to continue to help us with the goal to reduce crime.  The DPD remains committed to ensuring the continued safety and well-being of the community.
