Integrated Canine Service (ICS)
Overview
The Delta Police Department Canine Section was formed in 1983 and the New Westminster Police Service Canine Section in 1972.
In January 2003, the Delta Police Department Canine Section and the New Westminster Police Service Canine Section joined forces to form the Integrated Canine Service (ICS).
ICS supports patrol shifts in both cities attending various calls for service and calls that involve tracking suspects, criminal apprehension, area/building searches, evidence searches and narcotic/firearm detection. The ICS dog teams also attend outside municipal and city police agencies that require the use of a police dog.
When not patrolling, ICS teams are deployed on a callout basis with the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team (MIERT) for high risk situations/operations or the Lower Mainland Integrated Tactical Team (LMITT) for crowd control management.
Presently there are eight dog teams, one of which is the Sergeant.
All members of ICS handle one dog, seven of which are German Shepherds trained for patrol work, and one is a Labrador retriever for drug detection.
Each dog team undergoes extensive training. During this period the dogs, along with their handlers, are taught tracking, property/ evidence searches, area searches, building searches, handler protection, criminal apprehension, obedience and agility. Once validated and working with patrol, dog teams are continually training for the betterment of the dog teams' abilities and further development of the dog/handler expertise.
Since its inception ICS has been responsible for apprehending hundreds of criminals and locating crucial evidence and property.
