Fraud
Grandma Scam
This scam is known as the Grandma Scam due to fraudsters targeting the senior community. This particular fraud draws on a person's emotion in hopes of drawing money out of people.
How the scam works
A "supposed" family member will call the potential victim and state that they are out of town and in another province. They will state that they are in trouble with the police and need money to help with lawyer fees and bail, and request the money be wired.
Often the fraudsters will pose as grandchildren and wait for the victim to provide a name.
If this happens to you, contact the family members yourself and confirm the story prior to sending any money as this may not be your family member that called you.
Fraudsters are primarily targeting the senior citizen community and deceiving them into sending money to whom they believe is a family member in need. However, the family member is safe and the fraudsters collect the money being sent.
If this happens to you, do not send the money; contact the Delta Police Department at 604.946.4411.
