Disposal of Unwanted Firearms
In May 2006, the Government of Canada introduced a series of short-term measures intended to streamline the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program and ease the administrative requirements for firearms licence holders.
One of these measures was an amnesty, made in accordance with section 117.14 of the Criminal Code, to encourage registration of all long guns.
Also, in May 2008, the Government decided to allow individuals to re-apply for a Possession Only Licence (POL) for a limited period of time. The original purpose of the POL was to licence individuals who were already in possession of firearms. The POL must be renewed every five years, but a number of individuals neglected to do so. The Government amended the firearms licence regulations so former POL holders could re-apply for a POL.
The Government of Canada has extended these firearm compliance measures until May 16, 2013.

Owners who no longer want to keep firearms can dispose of them either by selling or transferring the firearms to a valid license holder in accordance with the Firearms Act, or may turn the unwanted firearms over to the Delta Police for disposal.
Additional information is available from:
Those owners who need to dispose of their unwanted firearms may call the Delta Police Department at 604.946.4411 for assistance. We ask that firearms not be brought directly to the police offices as transportation of a firearm without proper authorization and accompanying permits is prohibited. Once the request has been received, a police officer will come by and pick up the firearms. Please ensure that the firearm is unloaded and rendered safe to handle or is disassembled.
The Delta Police would like to remind citizens that unlawful possession of a firearm is a criminal offence. Persons found in contravention of the Firearms Act may be subject to criminal prosecution.
