Throughout the year Delta Police officers participate in a variety of community building events, many of which are carried out in their off–duty time. They give their time, energy and talents to heighten community awareness and involvement for a variety of charities and programs. It is not the officers alone that make a positive difference, it is the spirit within the community that makes a real difference—people helping people. These meaningful community building events include:

  • BC Law Enforcement Torch Run - Special Olympics:

Each year the Law Enforcement Torch Run raises millions of dollars worldwide for the Special Olympics. The Torch Runs are held just before the Special Olympics begin.

The mission statement of Special Olympics is:

To provide individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to enrich their lives and celebrate personal achievement through positive sports experiences.

Staff Sergeant Debbie McLeod and Constable Erin Gray raised funds throughout the year in support of Special Olympics and in June participated in two Law Enforcement Torch Runs—one in BC and the other in Greece.

Constable Erin Gray participated in the four-day Final Leg Run in the Lower Mainland.

"I became involved with Special Olympics as I recognized what a difference they have made to people with intellectual disabilities, their families and our community. Having an aunt with intellectual disabilities myself, and having heard stories about the lack of support in her youth, I saw an opportunity to be a part of something that gives so much back to the athlete in ways that are immeasurable."

Torch Run, GreeceStaff Sergeant Debbie McLeod was selected to represent BC as the law enforcement officer to run with approximately 150 other law enforcement officials from around the world, for three weeks through various communities in Greece (including the Greek islands and Cyprus). The Torch Run concluded on June 25 at the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics World Summer Games at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens.  »S/Sgt McLeod's blog
